The current General Synod comes to the end of its 5-year term next week, triggering an election process which will begin in the summer and run into the autumn.
It is really important that those who are qualified electors and who want to vote in the elections watch out for email communications about the elections - and contact the diocesan office if they are concerned that they might not be receiving any such communications.
As a reminder, for the House of Laity of General Synod the electorate are the Deanery Synod reps elected by parishes as well as any other ex officio lay members of the Deanery Synods (for example, lay members of Diocesan Synod who are not also Deanery Synod reps). As part of the election process we will be in communication with Deanery Synod Secretaries/Administrators about their membership lists, but both we and the deaneries rely on information from parishes being up to date.
The clergy list for the House of Clergy elections is much easier to compile, but again any clergy who are expecting election communications and who don’t receive them are asked to get in touch to ensure their name is on the list of electors.
Key dates in the process:
- 14 July – Expected dissolution of current General Synod; Deanery Synod secretaries are asked to check elector lists provided by the diocesan office
- 20 July – Deanery Synod secretaries respond advising of any changes
- 29 July – Initial letter/email sent to all electors with information about the elections
- 14 August – Invitations to nominate issued
- 7 September – Close of nominations and deadline for receipt of election addresses
- 21 September – Invitations to vote issued
- 13 October – Voting portal closes
- 14-16 October – Counts take place and results announced.
